Survey

1.The group activities helped me learn more. The least would be most of the readings because they were so long, similar and had hard words in them to read. Core 3 helped me the most. The one that helped me the least would be core 1.

2.The text that helped me the most was the Devoss essay. The discussion helped the most because the texts were hard to read. Half the discussions you went off on a tangent so it confused me sometimes. The teachers usually just have discussions and they normally helps me understand.

3.I did not like how scatttered brained you were and how late you put stuff up on your blog. Most of the time you helped. You took a little too long sometimes to reply back to emails. Yes, i was able to fix my papers from what you told me.

CARS

Move 1-Establishing a territory: Recently I’ve began to notice that there is not any originality in movies anymore. It seems that every movie coming out nowadays is a remake, an adaptation or just a rehashed idea that did not go over well the first time.

Move 2-Establishing a niche: Not many people understand what constitutes as Digital Plagiarism in script writing. So What exactly constitutes as plagiarism in the entertainment industry and what is the Internet’s role in providing ideas as well as making scripts more available to filmmakers and the public?

Move 3-Occupying the niche: The purpose of this essay is about Digital Plagiarism in script writing. By the end of my essay the reader will know who is concerned by this problem and what people are doing to prevent it. I will start off explaining the topic and then go into each individual who would be concerned with the problem and have qoutations from articles. I will also put in a few interview quotes that I have.

Thursday Assignment

My research for Core 4 is an argument of definition and fact. It is both because I am using research from people’s personal opinion and also from straight up facts and numbers. In the Lundsford book, it talks about how factual arguments need hard facts and visuals, while in an argument of definition it is more about who has the passion to argue for it. The book also states that in an argument of definition it is also about people’s opinions and how they start with a claim. In The article by John M. Barrie, he talks about how “25 million users of the World Wide Web”. He uses other statistics when talking about how many people use “Cheater.com claims to have over 30,000 members and adds approximately 100 new essays to its database each week". In the article by UNK, they give the definition to what copyrighting is and what is protected by it. However, in my other articles such as by Poynder and York, they use personal opinions. In the Poynder article it talks about "Aleksandar Skocajic, a Belgrade, Serbia-based mechanic with Telekom Serbia, for the last 8 years, believes that Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, and Walt Disney's Touchstone Pictures all acquired plagiarized versions of "Magma Town" ("Volcano of Death"), a screenplay he wrote in 1994". In the York article, he talks about if the script is not copyrighted it is fair game. Moreover, by having these two sides to the argument I think it will help make my Core 4 better well rounded.

Reflection on research

The conversation between all the authors basically agree with that plagiarism is in script writing. All except one author who disagrees saying that it is fair game. The problem I see with this research is that not a lot of people write about plagiarism in script writing and if they do, they are against it. So it is hard to get both sides of the story.

Literacy In The Digital Age

When there are no other options when writing a research paper every college student goes to the same place for help, the internet. Research journals by the thousands and articles by the millions anything is public domain as long as you know how to spin it correctly. Digital literacy is as important today as regular literacy was back in the 1800s, if you didn’t know how to read there was no way for you to get ahead in life and business. Many people made their livings as professional writers and people paid to read what they had to say. But in today’s world of computers, everyone can be a writer and tell the world what to think as long as there are people out there willing to read and more importantly know how to access the information. So are good thoughts making it to the masses? Digital literacy is the ability to find exactly what you need and use it for whatever purpose is at hand, if it’s out there you can find it you just need to know how to get it.

Digital literacy affects everyone with an internet connection and a need for information among other things. For myself I remember playing video games with my brother, just like Charles Jackson in the DeVoss paper did. My family has always been very technologically savvy. I have had a computer since I was 6 years old and played Barbie games on it. If I did not have technology around me I would not be able to function, almost everything I do is done with technology. On just my phone alone I have everyone's contact information, my calendar and memos.

I think sometimes I depend on technology too much and other times not enough. When my phone dies and I do not have access at the time to a computer I cannot get in contact with anyone, check my calendar, ect. However, last semester it rained really hard and my notebook got wet. I lost all my notes, unlike my friend who had been typing his notes the whole semester. It definitely depends on the situation but it tends to lead to me to depend on technology a little too much.

Since technology has been a part of my life since I was so young I believe it has lead me to my major. My major is purely based on technology. I want to be a director. My hope is to one day being great but without technology I cannot get anywhere. A Film major must be able to circumnavigate through Celtx and Final Cut Pro just on the computer. These are two of the main programs that all film majors must know how to use. After that they need to know how to use a video camera. The ability to edit a movie is purely based on using computer programs in order to add to the movie. I am a little behind because I do not know how to use a Mac and Final Cut Pro. So that is definitely something I need to learn how to use, just like Daniele DeVoss did when she learned how to use all the programs for her website. Once I able to grasp the technology in my major, I know for sure I can master film.

Another important aspect of my life is reading. I am an avid reader. I tend to like reading books of many genres but it can get pretty expense. I have attempted downloading books onto my laptop. I also have tried to read books on the internet, and have them emailed by chapters daily. It can be useful at time but daunting when I cannot catch up with those pesky emails. Now that the Kindle and the Nook are out, leafing through books, owning bookshelves, and carrying around their weight may become obsolete. The fact that it eliminates the burden of carrying around their weight is a plus for me. I like to carry books and read them but now with the Kindle, I can have over one hundred books in one tiny computer that weighs near to nothing. I will miss leafing through the pages, dog earring them and collecting them but it is a positive thing in my life.

Computers are an everyday thing, people rely on them for everything. They’re in people’s phones to their cars, and now even in their TVs. Digital literacy is on the rise, more and more people everyday from this generation make a big enough difference to have a presidential election campaign get a good majority of hype from the internet. People have literal lives in digital worlds, we use computers to communicate with family, friends, teachers, and co-workers. It used to be if you couldn’t read a book you were dumb, but its turned into if you can’t use a computer what is your real use. Even doctors have to look things up sometimes and even more often thy have electronic systems that tell them where they need to be and when, and it is the same all across the board with occupations. If you didn’t learn to use the computer program that does twelve tasks for you and all you have to do is press a single button in school, you have to go back, because it’s that important to be trained on the newest and best pieces of technology.

In the article "Developing audience awareness in writing" by Jose Brandano Carvalho, the author is discussing the importance of a writer understanding a reader. In order for a writer to grasp what his audience is getting out of his writing, he first needs to understand how to read. They did a study on Portuguese students and they discovered as stated in the article "We saw writing as a very complex activity in which the child could not possibly attend to all its requirements simultaneously." In otherwords to be able to write they need a cognitive awareness before being able to be their own author, thus they need to read to have their audience understand them.

part 2 of core 1

According to Neil King, "If you don't know how to use a Mac computer your screwed." Everything a Film major needs is found on the Mac computer. The technology I will be using for my career will be Final Cut Pro and Celtx. Final Cut Pro is used to edit a movie, from cutting time off and adding music to the movie, it is a quintessential program that a Film major needs to use. Celtx is used for script writing. The Celtx program formats the script.
The other major form of technology that i will be using the Panasonic P2 video camera. The camera shoots in Hi-definition. It has a 55x zoom and has a spectacular visual quality. The mechanics of the camera are easy to use and manipulate. I find these three technologies to be necessary for my future goal as a film director.
